It’s been over 6 months since we’ve moved, and it’s about time to get our act together and start decorating. We had a big “push” right after the move, obviously, but we’ve been stuck since.
The first room I decided to tackle is the family room. This is the room we hang out it – it has the Wii, a TV, a craft table for the kids and a computer desk, and it also doubles as a guest room. Eventually it will become a room for a child – so I didn’t want to put a lot of money in to it only to change it in a few years.
So: low budget, comfy for everyone, durable and washable are in order.
I started out with a more sophisticated vision in mind – grey with pops of yellow, which is definitely one of the trendier design schemes around right now. I filled my pinterest board with grey & yellow inspiration. But then I saw this rainbow bright living room and this “Confetti Pop” room and yellow went out the plain-no-curtains window and strong base colors came in.
The couch will be covered with a removable, washable (!) dark grey slip cover. The floor cushions will be covered with a strong yellow & lime, and I will add four smaller throw pillows in bright orange, pink, purple and turquoise.
We have blinds for blackout purposes, say if we want to watch a movie, but we will add some light weight white curtains to give the room some warmth while letting the sun in. The room faces south, so there’s quite a lot of sun to let in – which is great. I love sunlight! Next to the curtain I want to hang string lights, I hope to make them myself to match the pillow colors, but I’m still not sure if I can pull it off.
One wall will be painted grey as well, we were thinking of adding some texture – sparkles maybe? hmmmm. That would be fun. We’re thinking of magnetic chalk paint on another wall so the kids can hang their art and school papers.
Last but not least, we’ll add a flat carpet. I drew it neutral, but I’m not sure if that’s the best option. Maybe an ombre chevron or even rainbow colored stripes would work well. What do you think?
