OK. So this hat will probably get the hard core Star Wars fan really upset. Because it IS NOT an exact replica of R2-D2’s head (or whatever you’d like to call his top half). BUT, lucky for me – my son is either unaware of these nuances or doesn’t care as long as his head is warm. I guess you could say it’s good enough for Jar-Jar.

Wow, so many levels of bad puns, sorry!

This hat is made with bulky weight yarn, so it makes up for a speedy project, perfect for a quick gift. Beep-do-beep-boo, so let’s get started.

Materials

  • 1 ball grey (MC) bulky weight yarn (you’ll only need about half)
  • 1 ball blue (CC) bulky weight yarn (you’ll need less than half)
  • 9mm hook
  • A small amount of worsted weight black yarn.
  • Even less worsted weight red yarn.
  • 4 – 4.5 mm hook
  • blunt needle for weaving in loose ends

Notes

  • This pattern was written for and tested on a 7 year old. However, you can make the hat to fit your child (or other recipient) by adjusting the yarn weight or hook size.
  • Unless otherwise instructed, do not cut yarn when changing color. Instead, carry the yarn across the back or crochet over it as you go.
  • Unless otherwise instructed, always join in the top of the first st of the round (not in the top of the ch). Then skip this stitch when crocheting the next round.
  • Buttons are worked in continuous rounds, do not join or turn. Place marker in the last st of each round, moving it up as you crochet.
  • I like to use half double crochet because it’s tight enough to be warm, while still softer than single crochet normally is.
