Crochet Bunny Hat Tutorial | Oomanoot #crochet #free #tutorial #hats

The first year I started making winter hats for the kids (well, it was one kid back then) I just went ahead and made it. No stress, no worries – it was just a fun way to pass the time. Then it became a “thing” that I do each year, and while it still was (and is!) fun – I knew that I had better get the requests as soon as possible to make sure I get all the orders done in time for cold weather.

For some reason, I kept missing the mark – having hats ready in September when everything is still smoldering hot in this part of the world, or being too late and having to use hats from last year for a few days (oh! the horror of hats of yester-year!).

This year, I was all ready with the bunny hat for my daughter (my son’s hat has it’s own story which will be told in a different post), but I was absolutely dreading writing up the tutorial. The crocheting was a breeze – but I was totally worried about the pictures. Taking good pictures of a hat when you are unwilling to show the model’s face online is pretty near impossible. Also, the short light hours make it difficult for me to get good lighting. Ugggh. But I think, given the circumstances, I have done rather well.

Taking a few moments to be proud – and on to the tutorial.

Materials

  • 1 ball bulky white yarn (MC).
  • 9mm crochet hook
  • blunt needle

Notes

  • This pattern was written for and tested on a 4 year old. However, you can make the hat to fit your child (or other recipient) by increasing for more or less rounds.
  • I like to use half double crochet because it’s tight enough to be warm, while still softer than single crochet normally is.

Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • st – stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch.
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together: Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 stitch decreased.
  • [ … ] – repeat instructions in [ ] as many times as specified.

Instructions

Hat

1: With MC, ch 3. 10 hdc in third st from the hook, or use the magic loop method. Join with sl st.

2: ch2. Work 2 hdc in each st around – 20 hdc at the end of this round. Join with sl st. (20)

3: ch2. [Work 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st] 10 times. Join with sl st. (30)

4: ch2. [Work 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 st] 10 times. Join with sl st. (40)

5-13: ch2, hdc in next st, continue hdc in each st around. Join with sl st. (40)

Bind off.

Ears (make 2)

1: With MC, ch 6. sc in second st from the hook, sc in each remaining 4 st. ch 1, turn. (5)

2-22: sc across. ch 1, turn. (6)

23: sc in next 2 st. sc2tog. sc in next 2 st. ch 1, turn. (5)

24: sc across. ch 1, turn. (5)

25: sc in next st. sc2tog. sc in next st. ch 1, turn. (3)

26: sc across. ch 1, turn. (3)

27: sc in next st. sc2tog. ch 1, turn. (2)

28: sc2tog. ch 1. (1)

sc evenly all around the ear, down the sides and back to the tapered edge to give it a nice finish. Sew both ears on the hat. I placed them slightly to the back of the hat at the 3rd round, but you can place them where you feel is cute. We are going for cute.
